Bonus section:  Apply your pop culture knowledge to television
n  a popular TV show that you watch and your reactions to the show
-Job Hunting Reality Show
“Job come, and gone, the future is broad”- slogan

TV shows are becoming more and more colorful now. Watching TV programs is part of our daily life. This is one of the elements that can be connected to the pop culture. I always watch the Job Hunting Reality Show which is one of the most popular TV programs in China in recent years. Sometimes, it is funny and very useful. The purposes of watching this kind of shows is not only relax but also let us learn some language and interview skills that can help us to find a good job successfully. Maybe you knew about the TV show: Perfect Match. I have no idea that which one became popular first, but when a kind of reality show got well received, and then it would derived many similar programs. This is pop culture what I understand.

7. Glog

We took many pictures from street and the museum. Finally, we got two interviewers. Both of them, they could give examples to tell us what was pop culture. Such as music, movies, and fashion, clothe, etc. But they had no idea about high culture.
I think we prefer choosing pop culture because pop culture is an important part of our daily lives. We usually connect it. Our first picture is “dunkin’ donuts” which is a fast food restaurant that we can see it anywhere, so it is pop culture that linked with our lives. And the cow status is a referent of Chicago pop culture that everybody recognize and feel identify with it.

The rest pictures we took from the museum. I think those pictures were related to the high culture. However, high culture is part of culture that we cannot touch easily because it might fit those rich people or person who is under the specific condition

6. Food

n  Choose either Custom-Made or the second reading you did (or both).
Write a paragraph about your impressions of the reading.  This is NOT a summary.  What did you find the most interesting and/or surprising.

The reading An Expert’s Theory of Food Television’s Appeal.

Chinese language program Cooking Schools

Comparing with other two readings, this reading is shorter and easier for me to read and finish homework. I was interested in and confused at the beginning of the article that the young men were not cooks, why did they like to watch food TV programs? They would not follow the cooking steps to cook for themselves and not admire the cooks’ skill.
After reading, I realized that people liked watching food program because they needed to relax when they came back home from their work. Sometimes, watching this kind of TV programs can make you feel homesick such as when I watch Chinese food program, it made me nostalgia as an immigrant in America.

5. Movies

n  a movie review of an Academy Award movie – You should post a summary or part of your review.
n  a response to a movie review of a current movie

Black Swan is a psychological thriller horror movie

directed by Darren Aronofsky in 2009 and concentrated on how to become a perfect ballerina

during training and competition.

Because of Nina who wanted to be a perfect dancer in the Swan Lake, she was under huge pressure. In order to achieve her goal, she had  to release her dark side and pay her entire life. Fortunately, everything is only a photodrama and a movie. I can’t imagine that if all of these are in the real life, what would happen?

I’m not a professional movie reviewer, but the movie-Black Swan is worth watching for adults because it’s a horror movie. I like the movie because it’s not only an ordinary horror movie but also due to pressure and hallucination. [hə,lu:si'neiʃən] 幻觉

4. Music

n  your favorite song
n  your favorite artist or musical group
n  your favorite type of music

My favorite song is Nothing's Gonna Change My Love for You, but its original-Geroge Benson is not my favorite singer.
About 3years ago, it was my first time to hear this song that covered by a pop Chinese singer named khalil fang. Maybe every one of us has already listened to the song. When you listen to this song, you can visualize and feel romantic and you can understand the lyrics express the endless love of a man to his lover.
I'm not good at singing songs, but I like listening to any kind of music like classical, country (current and old stuff), reggae and many others except Rock&Roll and Rap. I love to download songs on my iPhone. I am thrilled that I listen to songs on my way home and school. Hearing songs in my spare time is one of my hobbies.

3. Reading

n  Pick one reading we did in class that spoke to you.  In other words, which reading made you think about something in a different way?   Discuss the reading and your reaction to it.

Home

Home at Last is one of the readings that we did in class.

Home is a place where you live at a particular time and where you are stationed and from which missions start and end. The author also told us about home’s definition at the beginning of this article. From this title, we can see that the author hoped this station was the last time to move. In my opinion, he wanted to live in Brooklyn the rest of his life, because he was tired of moving from one place to another place again and again. He liked Brooklyn where he wanted to settle down comfortable and never moved. If you always move, you cannot be familiar with the new home, the new city, and the new country. You cannot make friends with your classmates, neighbors, or co-workers either. If you cannot settle down, you will always be busy from moving. Even though you could "travelled" around the world via moving, you would be tired of it at the end.

2. Cultural Identity

n  An image or two from your poster

n  A short description of your poster.

Lion Dance is a form of traditional dance in Chinese culture. However, the lion dance is often mistakenly referred to dragon dance. You can separate them by the number of people.

The lion dance had started since thousand years ago in China. It used to celebrate the rarely activities or Lantern Festival; it’s also our country outstanding folk art. “Cai Qing” is one part of the Lion Dance, it means lucky and bring money into your house.

1. Pop Culture

n  How pop culture influences you.  OR
How you have changed since you have been in the U.S.

As a consumer, I am relatived with pop culture such as comic books were popular when I was a primary school student. I always used my money that my parents gave me to have breakfast to buy those comic books. When I was in high school, I usually asked my mum to give me money to buy popular clothing, shoes and handbags. I easily got into the trend. I just have been in Chicago for one year. I don’t know will I be immune to American popular culture. I admit it’s easier to get into the native culture and easily influenced, because I always focus on the pop elements such as clothing, music, drama, movie, etc. Since I have been here, I gradually accept some of the style of clothing, American drama, and talk to the Native-born Americans. My teachers and classmates encourage me to accept the culture wherever you live in. In order to improve my English, I try to listen to more and more English songs even though I couldn’t understand them at first, but I think I will understand in the near future. Maybe I cannot insist to it, I give up. Because I am not sure that listened to many songs that work for me.
